Licensure Resources

Graduates from KU’s School of Education teach all over the United States and throughout the world. Specific teacher licensure/certification requirements vary by state, and every student’s licensure situation is different.

The University of Kansas is committed to helping you make the right educational decision. Our Admissions Advisors and licensure resources are available to assist you in understanding teacher licensure/certification in the state where you live and work prior to your enrolling at the University of Kansas. In addition, we recommend that you check with your employer or home state department of education/licensure board to be sure our program will be accepted prior to starting your degree.

Program Notes on Licensure

Here are some basic facts about licensure/certification with the online Master of Science in Education (M.S.E.) in Special Education and an emphasis on High Incidence Disabilities:

  • This program does not offer initial teacher licensure/certification.
  • The University of Kansas is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
  • There is no requirement that you hold a Kansas teaching license to enter the program unless you intend to seek the special education endorsement in Kansas. State-by-state requirements vary, and non-Kansas license/certificate holders may be subject to Kansas license standards. Prior to starting your degree program, it is your responsibility to verify with your employer and/or home state department of education as to whether there are any additional requirements.
